Job Description:
Central Presbyterian Church is seeking an experienced,
energetic, and skillful Executive Director who has a passion for
serving the church and advancing the mission of Central Church and
its ministries, including its growing initiative, Resound Project.
The preferred candidate has at least 15 years of experience
operating religious, educational, not-for-profit, or for-profit
organizations with public access venues, and possesses the relevant
knowledge, drive, and judgment to plan and accomplish the strategic
goals of a complex, multi-dimensional organization in a demanding,
fast-paced environment. In addition, the ideal candidate possesses
in-depth, hands-on experience overseeing the development of a
high-growth organization into a sizeable operation.Reporting to the
Senior Pastor, the Executive Director will serve on the Executive
Leadership Team. While the Senior Pastor will lead the development
of strategic vision and ministry goals, the Executive Director will
take a lead role in the execution and oversight of all operations
of Central Church and Resound Project with the goal that the
church's multi-faceted initiatives will be properly executed and
implemented, well-coordinated, and reasonably measured for
effectiveness. The Executive Director possesses the authority and
responsibility to ensure that all human resource and compensation
policies are executed across the breadth of the organization.Job
DescriptionThe primary responsibility of the Executive Director is
to translate the respective missions and visions of Central Church
and Resound Project into effectively functioning operations. The
expectation is that the Executive Director's time will be divided
roughly 75%/25% between Central Church and Resound Project.The
Executive Director will support the Senior Pastor and will provide
oversight to the staff with respect to administration, finance,
development, communications, facilities management, human
resources, information technology, and general operations, subject
to the direction of the Senior Pastor. An essential element of the
job will be setting and pursuing priorities for the development,
maturity, and growth of Central Church and Resound Project.General
ResponsibilitiesPersonal and Cultural
- Model a life of Christian faithfulness in reliance upon the
Holy Spirit by cultivating one's own spiritual, intellectual,
emotional, and physical life and by prioritizing relationships with
one's family.
- Embrace and promote a culture of service, excellence, humility,
integrity, courage, creativity, and joyful productivity, supported
by effective communications and team building.Operations
- Oversee the ongoing organizational design, definition, and
execution of operations; develop a framework of metrics with which
to assess effectiveness; and rebalance the organization and
operations as needed.
- Implement one-year and five-year strategic plans for Central
and Resound Project as set by Central Church's Senior Pastor.
- Assist staff members in goal setting, planning, prioritization,
and implementation in order to facilitate highly effective
functioning operations.
- Ensure the implementation of effective internal and external
communication strategies for both Central Church and Resound
Project.Finance
- Oversee and implement financial processes which guarantee the
solvency and stability of the organization and which satisfy the
organization's external reporting requirements, all within a
framework of effective financial controls.
- Lead the annual budgeting process for Central Church and
Resound Project.
- Present annual budgets and financial needs to the Central
Church Senior Pastor and Resound Project President, the Central
Church officers, and the Resound Project advisory board for
approval.
- Oversee the development and presentation of regular financial
reports that inform leadership regarding key aspects of financial
performance.
- Ensure the proper execution of annual internal and external
audits.Human Resources
- Oversee all human resource activities leading to attractive
compensation and benefits programs, healthy culture, development
opportunities for teammates, and fair processes for team members to
provide feedback on the organization and their experience.
- Ensure the Employee Handbook is accurate and updated on a
timely basis.
- Advise all staff members on the proper implementation of all
policies and procedures.
- Ensure that all human resource events are properly executed,
including new hires, terminations, benefits enrollments, and
employee self-reviews.
- Participate in the quarterly and annual staff review process
with the Senior Pastor and Personnel Committee.
- Define, oversee, and revise as needed Central's policies for
staff performance appraisal, feedback, and performance improvement
processes.Facilities and Infrastructure
- Oversee the design and execution of core operating platforms
including Central's physical buildings and infrastructure,
computing and communications hardware, and systems and software,
including third-party software platforms.
- Oversee the Facilities team and ensure the proper maintenance,
renovation, and repair of the building.
- Ensure the proper operation and maintenance of HVAC, MEP, and
fire and safety systems.
- Oversee all security personnel and regularly review and propose
improvements to building security.
- Ensure all operation manuals and necessary maintenance
contracts are in place.
- Review and approve external vendor contract documents and
capital expenditures.
- Oversee the purchase and/or lease of office equipment and
furniture as needed, executed primarily through the Facilities
team.
- Propose capital improvements to the Senior Pastor and
Facilities Committee to enhance the ministries and operations of
Central Church.
- Develop and review risk management strategies on an annual
basis and oversee all safety and security concerns.
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and city laws and
statutes.
- Ensure property and casualty insurance policies are in place to
adequately protect the church, staff members, and
congregation.About Central Church and Resound ProjectCentral
Presbyterian Church is a historic, 200-year-old congregation in the
heart of New York City that has experienced significant renewal
over the past 20 years and is currently home to a diverse body of
seasoned leaders, many families, and a dynamic body of students,
young professionals, and artists. Central launched Resound Project
in 2021 with a vision to strengthen new and existing churches in
light of the changing cultural context so that the gospel of Jesus
Christ might resound to the next generation. Resound Project is
constituted as an initiative housed within Central Church and under
the oversight of Central's officers along with its own President
and advisory board. It will remain deeply tied to Central through
interlocking board appointments, the fact that Central's Senior
Pastor is Resound Project's President, and also Central's role as a
leading source of funding for the foreseeable future. The combined
budgets of Central Church and Resound Project range between $4 and
$5 million annually, with plans to scale both entities over
time.Reporting Relationship
- The Executive Director will report to the Senior Pastor of
Central Church and the President of Resound Project and serve on
the Executive Leadership Team.
- Informal interactions with the Senior Pastor/President are
likely to occur on a nearly daily basis, with formal one-to-one
meetings occurring once per week.
- The Executive Director will meet routinely with the Senior
Pastor/President to discuss quarterly and annual goal setting,
performance review, coaching, and career development.
- The Executive Director will provide an operations report to
Central Church's officers and the Resound Project advisory board at
each board meeting.
- The Executive Director will provide the Board of Trustees with
reports on all finance, facilities, and insurance matters on at
least a monthly basis.Expectations of Central Church and Resound
