MD or New York, NY, United StatesPOSITION SUMMARY:The Director of
Business Development will play a key role in securing funding and
diversifying revenue streams. The Director will work closely with
Programs teams, maintaining knowledge of HIAS' signature approaches
(legal support, economic inclusion, mental health and advocacy) to
identify new funding opportunities and develop high-quality concept
notes, proposals, and reports for a range of public and private
institutional donors. They will collaborate closely with Finance,
Operations, Technical Leads, MEAL, Individual Giving, and other
colleagues to maintain and improve internal processes for grant
management.The Director of Business Development will be a frontline
fundraiser, meeting with private institutional donors including
foundations, corporations, Jewish organizations, and government
agencies. They will utilize donor trends, landscape analyses, and
data to inform their work and contribute to the organization's
annual fundraising goals.The Director will report directly to the
Vice President, Business Development and manage at least one direct
report. They will be part of the team's senior leadership and
provide ongoing support and mentorship to all team members. As part
of the External Relations department, the Director will
cross-collaborate with colleagues in Digital Fundraising,
Individual Giving, Marketing, and Communications. The ideal
candidate is a self-motivated and experienced professional with
excellent skills in writing, project management, and
communications.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Develops high-quality proposals, concept notes, and other
materials for institutional funders, working closely with the
programs and finance teams on project design, ensuring clarity,
consistency, and a compelling case for funding, and adhering to
donor/HIAS guidelines and policies.
- Facilitates proposal coordination, ensuring clear internal
communication on roles, responsibilities, and deadlines.
- Synthesizes HIAS' programs and interventions into clear,
compelling presentations, proposals, and reports for current and
new donors.
- Participates in regular meetings with Programs and Finance
teams to align on donor and proposal strategies.
- Conducts research to help cultivate relationships with
foundations, corporations, and other major funding prospects to
broaden HIAS' networks and match donor interests with HIAS' program
areas.
- Conducts outreach to and participates in meetings with new and
potential donors, especially foundations and corporations, to help
cultivate strong relationships and identify new funding
opportunities.
- Updates HIAS' internal grants databases and tracking systems to
ensure internal coordination and the timely submission of proposals
and reports.
- Ensures quality information management related to grants by
overseeing the regular maintenance of grant files, reporting
calendars, and updating HIAS' internal records.
- Monitors donor and philanthropic trends, as well as relevant
grant-making rules and regulations for changes and
developments.
- Provides support to team members including reviewing work,
developing best practices, and internal procedures for grant
management.
- Performs other tasks as assigned.QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS:
- 5-7 years of experience in grant writing, proposal development,
and fundraising (can include internships and volunteer
experiences).
- A proven track record in Business Development and fundraising,
especially with foundations; experience in researching and
identifying new funding prospects.
- Outstanding writing, editing, and proofreading skills; strong
verbal communication, presentation, and relationship-building
skills.
- Ability to work independently with remote management, highly
self-motivated, and must demonstrate a collaborative work
style.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with
demonstrated ability to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances.
- Previous direct service/program work in refugee assistance
preferred, knowledge of social service and social justice programs
in the U.S. a plus.
- Some knowledge of Judaism and/or the Jewish community, culture,
