DescriptionTo provide intensive nursing care to critically ill and
unstable patients; such care includes ongoing monitoring of vital
functions, assessing significant changes and initiating appropriate
interventions.Specific Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe Staff Nurse
in Surgical Step-Down Unit is in charge and responsible for:
- Assess and monitors patients conditions and initiates
appropriate nursing intervention including direct patient
care.
- Provides nursing assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification,
planning, intervention and evaluation.
- Evaluation of cardiac rhythms and administration of drips
according to protocols.
- Titration of medications according to protocols.
- Defibrillation of patients as necessary; assistance in
cardioversion when indicated.
- Initiative of patient/family education and psychosocial support
to family/significant other.
- Performance of the duties described in the generic Staff Nurse
job description.
- Maintain clinical competency through participation in
education, attendance at mandatory classes, BLS, ACLS Renewal and
knowledge of current Critical Care standards.
- Participates in performance improvement, TJC, and infection
control activities.
- Provide age appropriate care to adolescent, young, middle age,
and geriatric patients within the units.
- Implements Plan of Care based on patient problem list.
- Administers blood & blood products according to hospital
protocols.Minimum Qualifications
- A valid New York State license and current registration to
practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State;
and
- Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and
current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the
American Heart Association (AHA).Department PreferencesKnowledge,
Skills And Abilities
- Licensed and currently registered to practice as a professional
nurse in New York State
- Demonstrated commitment to continued professional
development.
