Job Description:

team!We are looking for a dynamic and compassionate Hospital
Responder to join our team. Cure Violence Bronx works with
community residents, businesses, and community-based organizations
to reduce and prevent shootings and killings in defined hot spots
within the 46th Precinct, which comprises the following Bronx
neighborhoods: Fordham, University Heights, Morris Heights, and
Mount Hope. The Hospital Responder develops strong relationships
with St. Barnabas Hospital staff, patients, and people in the
neighborhood who are known to be or likely to be involved in gun
violence to learn about and mediate issues and conflicts with the
goal of stopping escalation to gun violence. He/she must be
comfortable in a hospital setting and on the streets when and where
violence is likely to erupt and must have and maintain the
confidence of gang members and other perpetrators of
violence.Reports to: Hospital Responder, Cure Violence

Non-ExemptMajor Duties:
- Work closely with staff and St. Barnabas Hospital to reduce the
possibility of retaliatory violence and the return of the victim to
the hospital.
- Help prevent retaliatory shootings by meeting with a shooting's
victim and the victim's family in the hospital, or elsewhere, to
calm the situation, providing mediation and assistance, including
referral to any relevant support and mediation resources, and
remain in contact.
- Maintain an active caseload of victims of violence due to
guns/assaults while in the hospital.
- Perform Admission Criteria Screenings for approval.
- Conduct frequent contact with victims on a monthly basis until
discharge.
- Identify individuals who are high risk in order to connect them
with Cure Violence programs to help them rethink the impulse to act
violently and redirect their lives in more positive
directions.
- Educate the victim and family members about trauma and typical
responses to trauma and chronic stress.
- Encourage victims to involve themselves in stopping the cycle
of violence.
- Schedule home visits upon the release of the victim from the
hospital if the victim lives within B.R.A.G.'s Catchment Area and
the visit is warranted.
- Provide feedback to the Violence Interrupter Supervisor and
Program Supervisor on the hospital protocol and make
recommendations for improving the quality and success of the
program.
- Program activities include having a scheduled shift in the
Emergency Department and/or responding in an "on-call" 24-hour
manner and canvassing the Catchment Area as directed by
supervisors.
- Ensure that the data regarding hospital calls and responses are
kept up to date and notify leadership if there are significant
trends.
- Work with the Violence Interrupter Supervisor to ensure that
there is backup coverage if you are unable to respond because you
are not working.
- Complete a daily log that includes hospital activations,
interruptions, de-escalations, case notes, and referrals.
- Provide participants with support and linkages to programs and
opportunities in the community (e.g., job programs, GED, substance
use, and mentoring).
- Conduct outreach to the St. Barnabas Hospital (individually and
as a team member) to build strong relationships with other
stakeholders, youth, residents, businesses, and hospital
staff.
- Report to the Violence Interrupter Supervisor and Program
Supervisor and keep them informed of all relevant hospital
activities.
- Participate in responses to shootings that take place in the
Catchment Area.
- Plan, attend, and help facilitate events within St. Barnabas
Hospital.
- Build a network with other Hospital Responder workers.
- Engage and interact age-appropriately with youth and young
adults encountered and adhere to all agency guidelines and ethics
regarding participant treatment.
- Enter all such information timely into the prescribed database
on handheld devices or office computers.
- Be in contact with the Violence Interrupter Supervisor and/or
Program Supervisor at all times to be accountable for effective
time management and to receive guidance and direction.
- Attend all staff meetings in a timely manner, as well as other
internal and external meetings as directed.
- Participate in training programs prescribed by DOHMH and by GSS
supervisors, including conflict mediation, motivational
interviewing, trauma-informed practice, and other tools for
effective work.
- Learn and use trauma-informed practice (TIP), which may include
tools from the Sanctuary Model of TIP.
- Perform other duties as assigned.Qualifications:
- An in-depth knowledge of the Bronx 46th Precinct
neighborhoods.
- Residence within the area is strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with hospital settings is a plus.
- Ability to work with individuals and families during extreme
crises.
- Experience and direct knowledge of at-risk youth and gang
involvement.
- The ideal candidate is someone very close to the streets, able
to communicate effectively with gang members and other high-risk
individuals, and able to gain the trust of the highest-risk
individuals.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Computer literate and able to enter notes and activities into
databases via handheld devices and office computers.
- Ability to work a highly flexible schedule that includes late
evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to pass drug screening.
- Criminal justice history preferred but may not be under current
criminal justice supervision.
- Committed to working toward positive community change.
- Commitment to work from a strength-based, trauma-informed youth
and family development perspective.
- A valid, clean NYS driver's license is strongly preferred.
- Ability to use public transportation.
- Ability to travel intensively, stand and walk for long periods,
lift 25 lbs., bend and lift, and be otherwise physically
