As a Staff Software Engineer in User Experience Foundation, you will be responsible for writing frontend components, architecture, and documentation to improve and expand Accessibility at Etsy and within our Design System. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy's Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. • User Experience Foundation is responsible for the concepts, guides, systems, and components that make up the fabric of Etsy's customer experience.
• Our product teams use Etsy's mature Design System "Collage" to build beautiful, engaging, inclusive, accessible and useful products consistently to Etsy's Buyers and Sellers.
• You will work directly with Design, Product and Engineering leadership across all platforms to craft our growing landscape of systems. Your work will have a multiplier effect, touching all of Etsy's product teams as well as every piece of the customer journey.
• Design Systems is a truly cross-functional, cross-platform team made up of 10+ web and native designers and engineers who are curious, collaborative, leaders - if that resonates with you, please join us!What does the day-to-day look like?
  • Serve as an advocate for Design Systems, Frontend, and Accessibility across Etsy.
  • Create and update reusable components that are used by product teams across all of Etsy.
  • Contribute to and lead projects - such as building Accessibility linters, improving our Metrics, or re-writing complex components.
  • Provide daily support for peers across Etsy (ex. writing documentation, reviewing pull requests, answering Slack questions, auditing new features, hosting office hours and classes).
  • Identify tech debt and propose tracks of work that move Accessibility forward.
  • Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:
    • Expertise in Accessibility and usability best practices, including accessibility standards and regulations (including WCAG, WAI-ARIA, Section 508).
    • Strong knowledge of testing with assistive technology, including keyboard only, screen readers (JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, TalkBack), as well as screen magnification and speech recognition software.
    • Experience with auditing features using automated tools (Lighthouse, WAVE, Axe).
    • Experience with reviewing designs for accessibility.
    • Expertise in writing JavaScript, CSS, and other frontend code, such as TypeScript, React, Storybook, as well as legacy frameworks.
    • Ability to hold an opinionated stance on Frontend Architecture and Design Systems - but always willing to change your mind.
    • Desire to work at the staff level, meaning you might be writing less code - and step back to let more junior engineers learn and thrive.

    • Experience leading, mentoring, and coaching other engineers in a compassionate manner.
