Job description: The Crown Currency imprint of the Crown division
of Penguin Random House seeks an Editor or Senior Editor to join
its nonfiction team. Reporting to the Editorial Director of Crown
Currency, the editor will solicit, acquire, develop, and edit works
of nonfiction for the Crown Currency program, including the
categories of business, economics, thought leadership, personal
success, and journalism/current events related to the business
world. In addition, the Editor will co-acquire/co-edit high-impact
projects with the Editorial Director. The Editor will also have the
opportunity to acquire select projects for the flagship Crown
list.
Crown Currency is the Crown division's imprint for books about
business, technology, and personal success, with authors like
Palantir CEO Alexander C. Karp, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales,
journalist Zeke Faux, Silicon Valley visionary Eric Ries, economics
YouTuber Gary Stevenson, and Earn Your Leisure podcasters Troy
Millings and Rashad Bilal. The flagship Crown imprint is the home
of some of the world's most acclaimed storytellers, thought
leaders, and innovators, including President Barack Obama, Michelle
Obama, Rachel Maddow, Susan Cain, Erik Larson, Matthew McConaughey,
Mustafa Suleyman, and Matthew Desmond.
The ideal candidate is a highly motivated self-starter who is
knowledgeable about the business world and nonfiction books, hungry
to continuously assess the factors that make books succeed in a
changing marketplace, and who will be comfortable working in a
high-intensity role and with authors possessing different kinds of
worldviews.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
Acquiring (or co-acquiring) and developing 8-10 new book projects
annually
Assessing potential value of submissions, commissioning projects
from self-generated ideas, researching comps, running P&L
scenarios
Directly participating in auctions, negotiating deal points
Working with authors on drafts, outlines, and revisions of
manuscripts, including structural and line edits
Consulting with the art, production, and managing editorial
departments on schedule, design, and packaging of books
Collaborating with the publicity, marketing, and sales teams to
position titles in the marketplace
Developing and maintaining author, agent, and publisher contacts
and engaging in developmental work with authors
Preparing title information sheets; writing and editing copy
Keeping abreast of trends and competitive titles
Please apply if you meet the following qualifications:
Minimum of 4-5 years book editorial experience for Editor or 7+ for
Senior Editor, with an established track record of acquiring and
shaping commercially successful books. Exceptional candidates from
related fields (such as business journalism) with transferable
skills and knowledge will also be considered.
Strong line and conceptual editing skills
Ability to multitask and prioritize when faced with converging
deadlines
Strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; ability to
attend to detail
Strong contacts within writer, journalist, and literary agent
communities
Ability to work cross-functionally with other groups, companies,
and organizations on shared projects
Ability to deliver timely, accurate work and demonstrate good
follow up and follow through
Strong negotiation skills
Sense of humor
The PRH office is located in New York, NY. This is a hybrid role,
requiring in-office presence for a minimum of three days per week.
We will consider candidates who are able to commute to our office
at 1745 Broadway from the tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT, and PA).
The salary range for the Editor level is $73,500 to $75,000. The
salary range for the Senior Editor level is $81,500 to $85,000. All
positions are currently eligible for an annual profit award or
bonus, subject to Company performance.
